'Using pen and ink (Rotring isograph .25) because being fascinated by the technical skill and elegance of 18th & 19th c. engravers, I decided to draw the Black Page as a homage to them. Closely crosshatched engraved lines were used to describe the darkest tones in an image, for which I substituted pen lines in ink. I knew it would be more or less boring, but "I can be as anal as the next man," I boasted to myself. I tried to observe my surface feelings with yogic detachment.
Initial excitement at the concept and minor technical hurdles gave way to workmanlike pride which slid into irritation and self-doubt at my initial decision. Should it have been a bold single brushstroke applied with Whistleresque mastery?
Eventually the inanity and tedium of laying one line as close as possible to the last crushed my impotent fury and I became a slave to the process. My concentration seemed to increase and there were even flashes of a sort of pleasure - emanating I suppose from the most perverse part of my psyche.
Nearing the end I wondered - what if I died immediately on finishing the last line? Would it be a fitting or even hilarious epitaph and elegy to my work?
Would it engender general pity and esteem ---- would passersby, stopping to cast a look at it walk on and sigh,

An event such as Yorick's death is aptly marked by visual silence, in which we might want to reflect on his life. As a fictional character life flows from type lines, so this might serve as a summary, eulogy, index. Perhaps a scholar can gain a new perspective by straining at this textual deformation, or by noticing the uneven distribution. And as far as the typographic colour of a page goes, this one's pretty black...'

'Using printing ink, Zerkall paper and inky fingers because I am mostly a printmaker and so wanted to make a print! I wanted the simplest and most direct image & so I used my fingers. I had to use a smooth paper rather than the laid paper provided in order to make clean prints & so then the resulting plate had to be tipped in to the space provided. I had great fun making many small inky images but liked this one the best.'

The music is Lillibullero whistled by Patrick Wildgust, the curator of the Laurence Sterne Museum. Tristram's uncle, Captain Toby Shandy, a British Army veteran of the fighting in Ireland and the Low Countries during King William's reign, whistles the tune to Lillibullero when he is offered any opinion or argument which would require passionate rebuttal or which he considers particularly silly.

This makes a fault or pull that would normally render the fabric unusable, like a ladder in a stocking or a pair of breeches. Behind the fabric is a glossy black rectangle or even deeper blackness. Materials were purchased in North Yorkshire and New York City. The piece was made in Harrisburg and Philidelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, in August 2009.'

To make this black page I tried to slowly fill it with lines drawn back and forth down the page - mimicking the movement of a writing pen or, indeed, a reading eye. However under the influence of L.S., I found I kept going into loopy zigzaggy digressions. If you look closely you will see layers of straight lines constantly undermined and complicated by random unruly arabesques.'

'Using Black Indian Ink because I wanted to make an image using chance, which for me can be equated with the marbled page found in T.S. My ink spot which I created by dropping ink from a brush held at height over the page, refers to an artwork I have previously produced: ' Full Stop (The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman) [2006]. For this work I photographed the final full stop from a first edition copy of TS, through a microscope and blew it up to an enormous scale. Laurence Sterne playfully used punctuation throughout TS, and the black ink visible in my photograph moves in unregulated form and density throughout the paper. In place of the clear, circular contours of the full stop, there is a stain, the product of chance and a disturbing factor within the traditional regulations of image and visibility. Similar to a Rorschach test, the enlarged inkblot gives space for free association. '

This in turn has been made into a photographic slide and then projected onto the blank rectangle provided. Light is used to provide black while a secondary reference to life and death is suggested by our capacity to turn electricity ON and OFF - we even talk about 'killing' the power. 'Rorschach blot using Jet, that has been ground to a powder and made into ink. Jet (fossilised wood from the Monkey Puzzle tree) is primarily known for two things, for its blackness and for its use in mourning jewellery. It has many lesser-known associations. Powdered jet added to water or wine was believed to have medicinal powers. In contemporary metaphysics it has been said that jet can be used to dispel fearful thoughts as well as protect the wearer against illness and violence. It is said to be a calming agent, providing diminishment of depression. Jet has also been known as black amber, as it may induce an electric charge like that of amber when rubbed.'

This printed 'blackness' is from a paperback edition of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, (Penguin Books, London, 1967; 1988 reprint). In this version the black page falls on page 61. The collage, measuring 114 x 69mm, is cut to fit from the centre of the 'text area' 145 x 88mm. The poor quality paper of this edition has discoloured considerably in the twenty or so years since it came off the press, however, in this 'detail' of the page, any optical deterioration is obscured by the density of ink.'

'Using ink, acrylic & enamel paint, 8mm celluloid film and pencil because the background black is a double darkness, ink (marking out but then obliterating two names) covered over with an acrylic found in my mother's old painting box. As a further layer, I have added the enamelled portcullis logo of Strong & Co. of Romsey, the brewery that employed my father for all his working life. My mother also worked there with him in their later years. The side chains of the portcullis are made of 8mm film. These almost black strips in fact contain a whole world of light - the final filmed images of my father, parking his (company) car in the drive of the home where I grew up, and which was then sold after he died in 1976. My mother died just four years later. Each film/chain forms a continuous loop on the reverse of the black page. The slogan 'You're in the Strong Country' accompanies the logo. As with a tombstone, where the words tend to weather away, the text here is similarly frail. The typeface mimics chiselling but the letters are laid on as a mere pencil sheen.'

'Using a bottle of black nail polish, a black felt pen, and a kitchen skewer because these were good everyday materials. The wide-nibbed black felt pen was used for an undercoating and the black nail polish for a visible varnish. Into the varnish I incised with a small meat skewer the opening words of my translation of Paul Celan's Death Fugue (black/milk/of/morning) in which the English presents a double meaning and metaphor that the German doesn't allow. This permitted me to pay homage simultaneously to Sterne and Celan. The bleeding of the finished page was also intentional.'

'Using a piece of slate from the Bwlch quarry, Manod because during World War II, the paintings of the National Gallery collection were hidden in a vast cavern under Manod Mountain. The slate comes from that cavern (technically it is called a "gallery" which tickles me). I know the slate is grey but the cavern is unbelievably black when you're standing in it and your torch goes out. I've always been intrigued by the idea of a totally dark cavern with brilliant, colourful, sensual masterpieces hidden in it. It gives me hope and makes me feel that if I root around in the darkest bits of my brain my fingers might just brush against the edges of a secret masterpiece.'

1. I wanted the fine lines of black ink to interact with the lines of the laid paper and establish the grounding of black as a literary page.
2. I wanted to work with the Black Art of printing - copperplate and letterpress - to make reference to this essential process of book publishing
3. I needed the thick layer of printing ink to achieve a different, contrasting texture of black, one that overruled the black surface so far achieved and which acted as a central sticky trap.
4. I wanted to weave and enmesh Elspeth Barker's raven hair into the central area of my page as she had become woven into my narrative in conceiving this Black Page. It happened thus: on receiveing my Black Page template in Yorkshire, I drove on down to North Norfolk. Arriving at Elspeth's home, I parked beside her Mercedes just as a thunderstorm began. Dark voluminous clouded sky, the heavens opened thick with hail and I heard a pitter-patter-clatter coming into my car. It was hailing onto the very envelope holding my Black Page template. In consternation, I carefully dried it, and later, emerging from my car I spied on the front seat of the Mercedes a copy of Tristram Shandy: Elspeth's car-side reading. I was struck. I knew that she and her raven black hair were to be woven into the making of my Black Page. Elspeth's first husband was a jackdaw who tragically died.
5. As the Black Page evolved in my mind, so corvine feathers and bats became further elements in the blackening narrative of its making. During the dry weather in June rooks had flocked down to the Yarrow to roost. As they slept, bats flew. Upon returning home to Yarrow from Norfolk there were a few dead bats in the Mill where I live. Having flung them out, I realized how they and the rooks could be part of this Black Page. I placed rook feathers and two dead bats into the stove oven overnight and carbonized them. I then pounded them separately with pestle and mortar. Dust to dust I was struck how each, in transformation, had retained its essence, and inter-wove them as a final raised flock on my Black Page.

'Using an anonymous rollerball gel pen because my lovely fine-nibbed Waterman fountain pen would not allow me to write small enough to fit my poem on the page. I like this rollerball, which has no markings on it whatsoever and was found in the pocket of an old coat. My mother had nightmares as a child because in the pockets of her father's old Great Coat, which hung on the back of her door, she could feel the bones of soldiers who had died in the Trenches. 'Using writing and celluloid because at first sight there seems to be little in common between Laurence Sterne and James Frazer. But both wrote monumental works incapable of completion. 'The Golden Bough' is, of course, not exactly appreciated for its humour. Yet I cannot help thinking that the founding notion of this life-work - A Key To All Mythologies - is inherently droll. And certainly the unexpected juxtapositions in the Index volume are an occasional source of laughter. As Frazer is now appreciated, if at all, more as a prose stylist rather than a theorist of anthropological verities, I have let stand one obvious , but rather irresistible, error in the text.'

'Using a photograph of ED Morel's anti-war tract 'Truth and War' (1916) because no fiction, not even Tristram Shandy, could necessarily anticipate the emergence of the 'black art' of propaganda as practised by the modern state. The pink markers reflect my search for references to Winston Churchill - considered by Morel to be, or to have become, a dreadful mythmaker during the Great War, and therefore a 'personal force for evil' against which he was pleased to stand in the General Election of 1922.'

'Using paper and sound because the three marks punctuating the Black Page are the waveforms of the sounds of the words 'Alas, poor Yorick', as spoken by the composer. These words were chosen as it has been known for publishers to entirely ignore the existence of the Black Page, with nothing apart from these words - taken from the end of page 72.
Here the BLACKNESS surrounding these marks represents the silence surrounding the utterance of these words. However, on closer inspection, one can see small anomalies on the marks and the Black Page reminding us that noise (visual and acoustic) is ubiquitous : there is no such thing as silence.
Interestingly this visual-acoustic language reveals, with some clarity, more than the construction of these words through time : the intense white section at the end of the first mark is the super-sibilant white noise of the 's' from the end of 'alas'; the roundness of the second mark ('poor') gives us a hint as to the composer's origins (North Riding of Yorkshire); and the final, disjointed blip - short, sharp, percussive - is the 'ck' from 'Yorick'.

'Using screen printed acrylic ink. I am a printmaker and serigraphy is my principal medium. This is a screen printed monoprint. It is three layers of black, each layer having a blend down the middle of blue-black against the brown black of the rest. The first layer had a white star for Sterne, which has been almost obliterated by the next two layers. The second layer kept another star which had been present on the first layer, and which the third layer has disguised but not hidden. If I had done the layers in a different order the result would have been different, in what was revealed and what was hidden, but the content be the same.'

(This is the design for the quilt that is on view at the exhibition at Shandy Hall)
Description of work

'The patchwork quilt-top was sewn by Alice King (who worked on theWomen's Work quilt with me), and comprises exactly 73 pieces. There are 18 off-white pure silk log cabin pieces around the edge and 55 black pieces in various different fabrics making up the lettered section. The patchwork was constructed using the card template technique. Each piece is cut out in card, and the fabric lightly tacked around it to form the flat, irregular patchwork shape. Thepieces are then sewn in place by hand from the wrong side with small overstitches before the card templates are removed from the back, along with the rough holding-stitches. The log cabin strips have been sewn on by machine. The quilting stitches (which hold the three layers together) are done by Alice Wood, by hand. The log cabin strips and quilt backing are remnants of raw Thai silk which came from the makerof Alice Wood’s wedding dress. The batting is 100% cotton and was leftover from one of my own previous quilts. The black pieces are from the two Alices' fabric collections, and consist of silk taffeta, jacquard cotton sateen, velvet, flocked chiffon and satin.'

'Using AutoLISP (via AutoCAD), Rhino3D, Bunkspeed Hypershot.
My source material for the Black Page was the entire text of Tristram Shandy, which was re-formatted to neatly fill the 'black' area while avoiding the use of hyphenated word-breaks. While working with the text I became fascinated by the variability of Sterne's spelling, and his skilful avoidance of seemingly common words. To illustrate this I wrote a program to represent each word as a solid vertical column, whose height was determined by its uniqueness within the book, and its width by the length of the word. As many words shared equal levels of rarity, I condensed the range down to 267 discrete levels to produce a more visually pleasing result. This created a three-dimensional landscape resembling a high-rise city of narrow monoliths, with 'The' (10,297 occurences) at ground level, and 'Godlike' (1 occurence) towering above the rest.

It seemed appropriate from the outset to draw the viewer's attention to each occurence of the word 'black' within the text, while somehow maintaining an overall darkness to the final page. To achieve this I extended each of the 36 'black' columns vertically upward and rendered them as the sole light sources in the model. The faint glow around each of these is the result of light catching the edges of surrounding word columns during the final rendering process.'

'Using Rotated Postcard because Barn Owl photographed by Eric Hosking in 1948 has been watching me as I write for the last four years. For me, the instant 'illumination' it provides has been a great source of focus in the snowblind of the 'Blank Page' = 'Black Page'. It all depends on how you look at a thing doesn't it?

Description of work

I have designed my black page around the wrong event. It commemorates Yorick's first meeting with Death and not his second. However this should in no way devalue your investment which in the long run should prove as sound as your pension pot. My design is taken from the portrait of Sterne by Patch at Jesus College, Cambridge. The black used is my regular drawing ink -Sennelier - whether it proves blacker than the blacks of my co-exhibitors is neither here nor there. The shape created solidifies the pictorial space between the protagonists - Yorick's
hospitable welcome proves a radical solution to an age old problem. It also emphasises the metaphysical space between life and death. Lax scholars unfamiliar with the original will perceive only an amusing shape set in relation to a much smaller and far less amusing one intruding from the bottom left. Due to difficulties relating to failing eyesight my first attempt has been inexpertly cut and collaged onto a second sheet. Although vaguely irritating you might just learn to live with it - much like death itself then. Here I must leave you.

I found these [ http://www.globe-shop.com/item.asp?itemid=5222 ] pencils for sale at the The Globe Theatre's online shop -- inscribed like the marble tombstone of Sterne's Yorick -- which come complete with a pewter skull atop their wooden shaft instead of the usual eraser. My black page drawing used one such red pencil in its entirety. All the shavings and chipped lead, the remains, are gathered in a transparent 15ml urn. The drawing was complete when the pencil couldn't be sharpened anymore. The skull, and the remaining stump of wood that it is impaled upon, form the lid of the urn. Although bruised the rag paper just survived the scratching.

'Using Tristram Shandy and the King James Bible because both can be taken to offer a sense of totality. The page starts with the beginning of each text and ends with their last lines. Each line adds another copy of the texts until the midpoint is reached, when a line of text is subtracted from each subsequent line on the page. Theoretically the whole of each text is present. In an analogous sense the page contains everything that has happened and can happen. In this sense the black represents the accumulation of all thought and activity that fills the white void of the blank page.'

This year is the 250th anniversary of the publication of the first two volumes of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman by Laurence Sterne.
On page 72 of Volume I the reader is informed of the death of the character Parson Yorick with the words Alas! poor Yorick. The opposite page [ 73 ] has the space that the text should occupy filled with black.
The Incline Press has impressed the outline of the original page onto a sheet of A4 handmade Somerset paper and the page number [73] has been printed and the proportions of the rectangle outlined.
73 artists/writers have agreed to make a new Black Page on this printed paper for exhibition in the gallery at Shandy Hall in September 2009. All the Black Pages will be for sale and all will be visible on this blog.
